About DigitalService

DigitalService is a wholly owned subsidiary of the German federal government and an internal digitalization partner to the country’s public administration. Set up as a federally owned limited liability company under German law (GmbH), it has been designing, developing, and operating cloud-native digital solutions since 2020 and now employs over 250 people. Its work is focused squarely on users in an effort to create digital products aligned with the needs of the public, businesses, and the administration.

Aside from developing products, DigitalService also advises the federal government on all aspects of the digitalization of the administration, from formulating and implementing regulations and standards through to control mechanisms. It runs numerous projects and programs to empower administrative staff in their digitalization work and foster a strong and modern digital culture within the administration.

Thus DigitalService combines delivery, consulting, and empowerment to ensure an efficient, user-focused, and state-of-the-art administration.

Showing big impact through small components

The welfare state should reach citizens more digitally and with less bureaucracy. Therefore, the expert panel “Digitalisierung Sozialstaatsreform” is publishing its roadmap for the digitalization of labor and social administration, today. For the reform being a success, implementation matters. Agile, user-centered components can have an impact in how citizens feel the relief.

Sooner or later: For a digital Germany – a column by Christina Rieke Lang

Making Standards Work. The height of a step or an A4 notebook: We encounter standards everywhere in our daily lives. Most of the time, we barely notice them – precisely because they work so well for us. In the digitalization of public administration, however, standards can be a struggle. Yet common standards could enable better services for citizens while significantly reducing the administrative burden through interoperability and reuse.

Im April 2026 ist das Reallabor mit dem Launch der allgemeinen Zahlungsklage im Online-Verfahren in der Praxis gestartet. AIxIA 2026: Deutschland kann KI – Von der Pilotierung zur Skalierung
